Hardness: 7
Birthstone of: Aries, Sagittarius, Aquarius, Pisces
Brief history and geological characteristics:

Amethyst has been used in many cultures for thousands of years. Moses described it as a symbol of the Spirit of God in the official robes of the High Priest of the Jews, and the Russian Empress Catherine the Great sent thousands of miners into the Urals to look for it. In popular belief, Amethyst offers protection against drunkenness – the Greek word amethystos means not intoxicated. Amethyst is the purple variety of the mineral Quartz, and it is its most famous and valuable gem variety. Certain iron constituents in connection with natural radioactive radiation cause the magic colour of Amethyst.

Spiritual and healing energy:

“Amethyst holds the power to dissipate evil thoughts and quicken one's intelligence.” (Leonardo da Vinci)

Therapists and healers have been using Amethyst to increase their psychic abilities and intuition for centuries. Naturopaths use Amethyst to treat insomnia and sugar imbalances, and to relieve headaches. Cross-culturally, this special purple/violet coloured gemstone has been used as a symbol of peace and unification. It is also thought to evoke feelings of serenity and calmness in those who wear it. It is believed that Amethyst increases vivid dreams, enhances peace and love, fosters one’s intuitive capacity and higher spiritual aspirations. Amethyst is often used during meditation to provide an overall sense of spiritual balance.
